ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (FNN News) — Leesburg native, University of Florida student and Miss Florida winner, Mary Katherine Fechtel, was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner on the second night of the 2016 Miss America competition.
Fechtel wins a $1,000 scholarship along with her award.
Fechtel, who wowed the judges in a white and gold bikini Wednesday night, told the Associated Press she has struggled for much of her life with being too thin but has made peace with her body type and has adopted a new outlook about her physique.
“It’s OK to be your body type,” she said. “Just be healthy. There’s no ideal body type. Just work out and be healthy.”
Miss South Carolina Daja Dial also won the swimsuit competition on Tuesday night.
Thursday night is the finale night for Miss America preliminaries.
Winners of preliminary competitions accumulate points toward their final standings in the nationally televised finale from Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall, which will air 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday night Live on ABC.
